One of the most fun musicals on Broadway, with an amazingly lively soundtrack, is hands-down “SIX,” playing at the Lena Horne Theatre, located at 256 W 47th St.
The musical gives the six ex-wives of King Henry VIII of England a chance to tell their individual stories, and they are very entertaining, to say the least. The House of Tudor is called to task! “SIX” is a non-stop party on Broadway from the opening number to the finale! It will have you jumping up and cheering from your seat.
This musical has been a vehicle for Black actresses since its inception; as Broadway shows do, the cast gets updated. What is wonderful is that Black ladies are still a very vibrant part of this story and are playing their roles to the max! As of December 5, 2023, three new Black actresses in the starring Queen roles joined the cast. Khaila Wilcoxon plays Catherine of Aragon, Storm Lever portays Anne Boleyn, and Olivia Donalson is seen as Anna of Cleves. This cast is fresh off the “Aragon” National Tour. “SIX” is created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. Moss is also co-director with Jamie Armitage. The vibrant, exhilarating musical features choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille.
When you go to see “SIX,” it is no surprise that this musical won the 2022 Tony Award for best original score—music and lyrics and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. “SIX” has set design by Emma Bailey, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Tim Deiling, sound design by Paul Gatehouse, and orchestrations by Tom Curran. Make plans to hear these ladies’ stories; you’ll be thrilled you did!
