Parsley is most often considered a garnish and is legendary for its ability to cleanse the palate and your breath, which is why it is on your plate. Though most people don’t eat it, when they juice their veggies and fruits for their healthy green drinks, parsley is often added for its highly nutritious and powerful diuretic benefits, as well as its power to inhibit the further growth of most cancer cells. Aside from chewing the fresh sprigs to relieve indigestion, parsley is also rich in many important vitamins, including Vitamin C, B12, K, A, and folic acid. Folic acid is also a critical nutrient for proper cell division.
It is, therefore, vitally important for cancer prevention in two areas of the body that contain rapidly dividing cells—the colon and, in women, the cervix. The parts of parsley used medicinally are the whole herb, leaves, roots, and seeds. In my personal experience as a lay-Doula and breast-feeding peer counselor, I have helped many breast-feeding moms find relief from engorged breasts by having them dip a cloth in parsley tea and apply it as a hot compress to the breasts. This immediately causes the milk to draw down and flow freely.
