Back-to-School Resources and Job Fair Helps Start the New School Year

Senator Cleare, the Chair of the Senate’s Aging Committee, held a Back to School and Jobs Resource Fair for Youth and Families in partnership with Assemblymember Inez Dickens and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. The day long event was held on the plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell Office Building.
Hundreds of kids and families engaged with dozens of participants with information. It was another hugely successful Back-to-School Youth & Job Resource event, which serviced hundreds of students and families from Harlem’s 30th district and beyond. The daylong event featured organizations representing the arts, education, athletics, health, and job training opportunities. There was also representation from local businesses and government agencies that shared information with older youth and young adults about job training and workforce opportunities.
While attendees received free, fresh produce, kids of all ages enjoyed free frozen ices, popcorn, interactive sports demonstrations, and live music from area performers. As the event ended, children and youth received free back packs with supplies which included notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, calculators, rulers, and age-appropriate books.
“New York City offers a wealth of resources for our youth, but it’s crucial that we make them accessible”, said Senator Cleare. Programs in arts, education, athletics, sciences, and more should be available to all young people. We often overlook that those aged 17-22 are still young and may lack awareness of the job and educational opportunities available to them. It’s our responsibility to support them and help them be productive and find purpose in their lives. This is why I am proud to include them in this event. This is a well-rounded event packed with resources and opportunities for a range of ages both in the classroom and out.”
“Access to quality education and essential resources is crucial for the growth and success of our young people, especially in marginalized communities like Harlem,” said Hon. Inez E. Dickens, Deputy Majority Whip in New York State Assembly. “The 3rd Annual Back-to-School Youth and Resource Fair is not just an event; it’s a lifeline, ensuring that every child starts the school year with the tools they need to thrive. Together, with partners like Senator Cordell Cleare and Council Member Yusef Salaam, we are building a brighter future for our youth by investing in education, opportunity, and hope.”
“For our community, the back-to-school season brings excitement and challenges, especially for our parents,” said Councilmember Yusef Salaam. “We want to ensure that every child is equipped with the tools they need to succeed, and every parent feels supported. This event is about more than just supplies—it’s about uplifting our families, connecting them to vital resources, and fostering a sense of unity as we invest in the future of our youth. I’m proud to stand alongside Senator Cordell Cleare and Assembly Woman Inez Dickens to make this possible for Harlem.”
