Women’s HerStory Month 2025 was held in the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Building’s beautifully renovated 2nd floor Art Gallery, with a two-hour screening of “The Pieces I Am,” (2019) Toni Morrison, Noble Prize~winner, Literary Icon, Novelist and Writer’s documentary film which discusses her life and work and explores race, history, America, the human condition,” …the “white gaze.”
Later in the afternoon, “RESISTANCE REVOLUTION and STILL I RISE,” the Art exhibition was open for guests to view the impressive Exhibition and “Meet and Greet” the exhibiting artists.
The evening event was a complement and in tribute to the visual art exhibition, as guests listened to Harlem’s neophyte authors unveil and deliver “Throwback Tales” that offer their short stories, humorous moments, memoirs and selected reading from their published compendium; copies were on display for close-up engagement. Maestro Cellist and Voice Impresario, Mel Greenwich/Ensemble Sepia performed at 8:00 a tribute to “Lady Day,” his magnificent cover of “The Essential Billie Holiday” in voice and instrument to complement RESISTANCE, REVOLUTION…and STILL I RISE. “Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959) was a jazz singer and civil rights activist who used her music to highlight racial injustice. Her activism may have influenced the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.”
